Frequently Asked Questions

Getting Started

How do I create an account?

To create an account:

  1. Open the app and tap "Sign Up"
  2. Enter your email and create a strong password
  3. Verify your email address
  4. Set up your encryption keys (automatically generated)
  5. Set a PIN for quick access

Your encryption keys are stored only on your device for maximum security.

What is trust establishment?

Trust establishment verifies that you're communicating with the correct person:

  • Unknown: Contact not verified
  • Pending: Trust request sent, waiting for call verification
  • Trusted: Verified via voice call
  • Verified: Highest trust level with confirmed identity

Only verified contacts can receive secure messages.

How do I verify a contact?

You can verify a contact with a voice call:

  1. Add the contact to your list
  2. Tap "Establish Trust"
  3. Make a voice call to verify identity
  4. Both parties confirm during the call
  5. Contact becomes "Verified"

This prevents man-in-the-middle attacks and ensures authentic identity.

Messaging

How does secure messaging work?

kryptem uses end-to-end RSA-2048 encryption:

  • Messages are encrypted on your device
  • Only the recipient can decrypt them
  • Server cannot read your messages
  • Private keys never leave your device

You can only send secure messages to verified contacts.

What happens if I lose my device?

Your messages remain secure:

  1. Private keys are stored in device-protected storage
  2. Encrypted with your password
  3. Cannot be extracted without device PIN/biometrics
  4. Contact support to freeze your account
  5. Set up a new device with recovery email

Always set up a recovery email during registration.

Security & Privacy

How are my private keys protected?

Your encryption keys are generated and stored securely on your device, protected by your password and device security (PIN/biometrics). We never have access to your keys or unencrypted messages.

Your keys never leave your device except as encrypted backups you control.

What is zero-knowledge architecture?

Zero-knowledge means:

  • We never see your private keys
  • We cannot decrypt your messages
  • We cannot access your data
  • Only you control your encryption

Even if our servers are compromised, your data remains encrypted.

What should I do if I suspect a security issue?

Change your password immediately and review your trusted contacts. Enable all available security features in your account settings.
